I nearly failed high school.
Hi there, I’m Jake, CEO of Empowerment Tutoring. I started Empowerment Tutoring in 2019 with the goal of helping students through the undeniably traumatic COVID-19 pandemic. I had a difficult time in high school- prioritizing the wrong things, refusing to do the work, etc.- and I wanted to provide support to struggling students so they didn’t repeat my mistakes.
I found my passion in medicine…
After working overtime at dead end jobs for years after high school, I knew that I had to make a change in my life. I loved caring for people, so I enrolled in the nursing program at Oakland Community College. Through my studies I realized that I truly loved learning. I graduated with a degree in Biomedical Sciences and a 3.8 GPA from OU in April 2017.
But my passion wasn’t medicine
I loved learning about the human body in such awe-striking detail during my Biomedical Science studies at Oakland University. I was always helping teach difficult concepts to my peers in chemistry and physics. Over time I realized that I was more passionate about helping others achieve their academic goals than becoming a physician myself.
Learning How to Learn.
When I notice someone is uneasy about a concept, they also tend to struggle writing the process for problem solving out in THEIR OWN WORDS. Once we can slow down and engage those critical thinking muscles, we can develop a model for personalized learning.
After carefully working to standardize this model, I found Illeana Barragan and Nolan Munce, and our discussions led us to collaborate on bringing this success to a broader base of students.

Kids often feel like they have a lack of agency over a great many things. Reframing learning as something that was wholly “our own” gave us intrinsic reasons to hone our learning skills, and we’ve now seen this approach work for hundreds of students.
We bring this philosophy and method to all of our programs- empowering students from Kindergarten through College to tap into their passion for curiosity and improve their lives by achieving success as they define it.
